Selling Your Own Product Online – 6 Easy Steps To 6 Figures

How To Make 6 Figures Selling a Digital Product!

Selling thousands of products monthly as well as hanging out with some of the top online marketers, I have been able to see the in’s and outs of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to selling products online.

The top product launches and top selling digital sites have 3 things in common:

    1. * A great OFFER
    2. * A Well Thought Out Sales Process that converts
    3. * Lots of Affiliates – sometimes Thousands of them

People want information and if it’s going to benefit them greatly, they will pay for that information. Think about it for a minute, say you wanted to loose some weight because it would make a HUGE difference to your life style, wouldn’t you be happy to pay $37 for the answer. Of course you would! I hear so often people say to me “I give to much for free, I can’t launch a product” – if you give so much for free, your one up on everyone else because people know what they can expect from you, great content and if they are paying for it, it’s most likely to be even better!

1. Putting Together Your Digital Product

There are so many different ways you can go about putting a product together, depending on your industry and who you are, one may be more your style than another. Ultimately you want it to solve a problem, so If we take the example of losing weight again, the problem being solved is people learning how to lose weight. Personally I believe you should cut out the fluff, don’t think that you need 100 pages in your eBook because you don’t, if you can teach it in 10 pages do that, as long as it’s unique and works, people don’t care! The two most popular solutions for digital products are eBooks and Membership sites, both do the same thing, just are delivered differently. eBooks are usually just word documents which are converted into PDF’s to improve usability / presentation and membership sites usually have video and text.

If you are struggling to brain storm the perfect product idea, here’s some great examples to get you thinking:

  • Site Profit Domination – a 6 video module course on how to monetize your website which also includes transcripts and audios. Or how about “Never Fail Pick Up Techniques” – a 6 module video training course on how to pick up women.
  • Bullet Proof Blogging Report – 107 Ways To Improve Your Blog. Or “The Fast Track Weight Loss Report” – 34 Ways little known techniques to lose Weight

If you are struggling for an idea, leave us a comment and we will try give you some examples of other products you could model yours on.

2. Delivering Your Product To The Customer

Once you have put together your product, you now want to build your membership area and for me, this was by far the most fun part, seeing everything come together. Firstly, my top recommendation is to you build your membership area or download pages on WordPress. We are all are familiar with the software, it’s also free and it’s known by the majority of programmers. Next you have to decide what membership plugin for WordPress you want to use, there are about a dozen options, after a lot of research (because this is the one thing you don’t want to get wrong!) I found two options and finally decided to use Digital Access Pass ( DAP ) and WOW I’m so happy I did. Here’s a quick breakdown of why you want this:

  • Whole membership area, everything you could imagine.
  • Build in shopping cart and affiliate program (no more ClickBank taking huge cuts), just integrate with PayPal Pro.
  • Small one time payment (again, no more Clickbank huge cuts or software fees).
  • Integrates beautifully with OptimizePress (see more below).

Here’s how I set up Digital Access Pass (DAP) for my business: People visit sales page >> Order through DAP shopping cart >> Automatically emailed login details >> Access to Membership Area >> Automatically an affiliate.

The automatic email sent to customers the second they pay. This way you cut out support issues and they have a record of their login details. In my email template I even added the customers affiliate link so that they can start promoting straight away!

This may sound a lot of work but using their software it literally took me an evening to set up my membership site. They also offer a consulting service which is basically them setting up your site with you through a online video share, this was really helpful in saving me a lot of time. (Worth the investment in my opinion -for the time saved) Like I mentioned before, it runs with WordPress so for adding and editing pages in your membership area, you simply login to your WordPress and do it there.

3. Customizing Your Membership Site Design and Layout

Digital Access Pass covers all the programming and technology side of things through WordPress. This means the design can be handled using a WordPress Theme, personally I don’t think using any standard theme will do your membership area justice, however my buddy James Dyson built a theme just to do this (plus lot’s more, see below). You can customize how the whole membership area looks, whatever I write here wouldn’t do it justice, you must watch the video on his site to understand just how advanced and easy to use this WordPress Theme is. Click here to visit OptimizePress.

4. Creating Your Sales Page

As I mentioned above, this is really important, you can send all the traffic in the world to your sales page but if it doesn’t look good you are screwed! Using WordPress again with OptimizePress you can create your sales page in minutes. Just drag and drop all the different things you want on your sales page, add some text and choose your template design and your nearly done. One thing I highly recommend, is get an eCover designed for your product, it’s basically an image to show how your product would look if it was a physical product, this helps you to show perceived value which of course increases your conversions.

Before the Big PRODUCT LAUNCH of your product, you may decide you want to do a Pre-Launch (usually to a small list or via some of your strategic JV partners). The goal here is to create awareness of your upcoming product launch and of course to get more people into a more targeted list prior to launch. Ideal ways to do this is to offer some free incentives / reports etc. Typically this can be a free PDF Report or a video related to your product.

It is essential I find to deliver real value here – give people something that will impress them, get them talking to friends about you and generally excited. And of course when these people join your pre-launch list you have a very targeted list (and high converting list) for when you actually launch the full product proper.

Let me give you an example – with the Popup Domination pre-launch we showed how visitors how to get more subscribers from their blog and how to make money from those visitors. We also highlighted the importance of using a light-box optin to increase your subscribers. And of course when we launched Popup Domination proper that’s what we offered – an easy to install and control Lightbox Optin, that would increase optins.

Another option is to use the squeeze page function for an exit page, using Exit Splash, when a visitor tries to leave your page, you suggest they grab your FREE gift first, this is a great opportunity to sell to them again and build your email list. Most affiliates only send traffic for a short amount of time, you want to take full advantage of that traffic while it’s there.

Here’s How Our Pre-Launch Squeeze Page Looks (created with OptimizePress)

One thing you are probably aware of by now is that Jame’s OptimizePress looks very good. James has worked with some of the top internet marketers in the world and his designs have been tested on millions of people. Using the date collected from testing, they were able to find which designs and features convert higher then others. That is perhaps the biggest benefit to me – my shortcut to success in that these designs have been A/B tested designs for maximum conversions. You can see my review of OptimizePress here!

5. Adding a Shopping Cart So That Visitors Can Buy

First thing you need to work out is which payment processor you want to use, such as SamCartPaypal Payment Pro, Clickbank etc. I personally have tried Clickbank, it’s good but it doesn’t give you full control and I personally am trying to build a business so for the new IncomeDiary site I looked at Nanacast and PayPal Pro. After a lot of research I found that PayPal Pro with  the combination of our membership site software Digital Access Pass (DAP) was by far the best combination for me.

Like I mentioned above, DAP includes a shopping cart and an affiliate program so you can everything other processors may offer but have more control and better functioning.

Here’s why I decided not to use the others:

  • You cut out the big cuts ClickBank take.
  • Everything is self hosted (SamCart hosts everything) which means you rely on them for your system and you don’t have complete control.

You should already have DAP set up, all you need to do is get approved by PayPal Pro which took me 3 days – then integrate it with your DAP which took around 20 minutes (just paste in several different verification codes in the back-end of your DAP). Now you should have your product all set up in your membership area, your sales page should be ready and you can now take payments. The only thing missing is lot’s of affiliates to promote your product!

6. Affiliate Domination (getting 1000’s of peoples to sell your product!)

Affiliates for those who don’t know are other people who have an audience similar to your product that could mention it and if they sell any, get a commission for each sale. I promote a lot of stuff online. When it comes to deciding what products I shall be promoting, apart from making sure it is a good product and adds value to my readers businesses – I also want to see the sales page and be convinced it is going to convert and also that the commission rate (and earnings per click – EPC) is good. Typically with digital products the commission rate is 50% because their are no expenses to the product seller and without the help of affiliates, wouldn’t have any where near the success they would without them.

Affiliate area powered by Digital Access Pass (designed by OptimizePress). Simply paste %%AFFDETAILS%% into any WordPress page and it will show all affiliate information for the user. It really is that simple and none techy.

Using Digital Access Pass, people can sign up as an affiliate to promote you and you can automatically make people affiliates when they buy your product. Don’t ask me how does it track who sells what, it just does, technology is clever! Put together a page on your site outlining all the benefits of being an affiliate, how to sign up and perhaps examples of some of your affiliates (Big Name Marketers are good). Showing other affiliates is great for social proof. Now all you have to do is ask every possibly person to promote you, the more affiliates you get, the more money you will make. My friend who recently did a 7 figure launch who wasn’t really well known before hand, was able to do this partly due to the shear number of affiliates. He actually hired a guy to be his affiliate manager and his job was just to contact affiliates and make sure they had everything they needed to sell as much as possible for him.

Bonus: Product Creation FAQ’s

Where should I host my product files and sales video?
Every marketer I know uses Amazon S3 which is a really cheap hosting solution for big files. Amazon is one of the biggest sites in the world and because of that, they have the best servers, hosting your stuff here will mean download times are as quick as possible.

How much should I charge for my product?
It’s a hard question to answer, I personally look for similar products and make sure I price accordingly. Most people use one of the following prices: $37, $47, $77, $97, $197, $997, $1997.

Should I Use An Exit Popup?
A lot of marketers use them because they do bring in results, on one of my launches I had 40% of people buy at the lower price from the exit popup. Sure some may of come back and bought at full price but I believe it does increase conversions. We use Exit Splash, click here to get it.

Where can I find affiliates to promote my product?
Everywhere, contact bloggers, people on Twitter, anyone ranking or advertising on Google for the key-phrases related to your product, product owners in your category on Clickbank, basically EVERY where. Try interview the big guys or promoting them first, this will give you a connection and them a reason to listen to you.

We first added a popup opt-in box to IncomeDiary back in 2010. Today, it gets us more subscribers than our homepage opt-in, footer opt-in, sidebar opt-in and squeeze pages combined. After seeing how well it worked for us, we decided to develop it into a plugin our readers could use. It's been so popular that over 60,000 websites now use it!

The best method for stable and excellent earning is introducing a membership system that is based on a subscription.

  6. Michael,

Thanks for the tips and the products to use to build your products.

I’ve found that the hardest thing for me is building traffic to the site. However, I’ve watched some of the stuff you sent out and have learned a thing or two. Maybe you can give some more ideas on how best to do that part of it?

I just started a new site at and I think I have an idea for a product based on some of the things you focussed on here. I have all the software elements I need, just have to put them together to work properly.

Good luck to everyone and thanks again Michael.

  7. Guts N Glam says:

wow, thanks for this post, michael… what a great tip!

  10. Great post Michael,

I have bought your products and I love them. I can really tell how much time and effort you put into the process and that is why your stuff works.

  11. Hey Michael,
Great tips man, and perfectly at the right time. I’m busy planning my next product which is going to be a membership site. Although I’m not at the stage yet where I am ready to start building the actual site, it seems like your suggestions give the solutions that I’m looking for at a later stage.

    Will bookmark this!

  12. Altug Lose Weight Fast says:

    Hey Michael,

Thanks for another useful post..just when I was thinking of launching my own product too! I did the keyword research for my niche and it is pretty highly searched. I also imagine it’s a desperate niche because it could be a matter of life and death so I imagine there is definitely a market for it.

It’s also something I do back home in the U.K part time and very few people are qualified to teach what I do..So I think this niche could make a great e-program.

One thing at a time though..I’m still trying to optimize my website (which I recently turned into a blog to make it more sociable) and your tips are helping me already. Pop Up Domination is helping build up my list and my traffic has always been pretty good at 600 uniques a day. (Surely you’d be expecting a good income from that right? Wrong! My old site had a million traffic leaks and adsense, ugh!)

Things are slowly coming my Twitter account up and running too grabbing followers on autopilot 🙂

    Thanks again

  13. Master Scott says:

I bought popup domination and love it, it really does add a professional look to the site. Debating on changing the membership platform, I am just using wordpress currently. Squeeze page probably needs an upgrade!

    Thanks again!

  14. Master Scott says:

Just to clarify, I mean’t my squeeze page, needs an upgrade : )

  15. Martin Percival says:

Michael, that’s a seriously comprehensive post!

Hmm, all I need to do now is to get down to creating that first desperately-needed product then 🙂

  16. Michael,

So happy I was introduced to you through Chris Ducker’s blog. A lot of this stuff is overwhelming yet fascinating to me…much to learn but I feel like I am finally up to the challenge. About to convert to Mac and am having my blog completely revamped (would love to say I am doing it all myself but sometimes it costs less $ in the long run to pay the experts, eh?). Thank you for all of your great content – will be spending more time with your blog(s) as I have freed up my schedule to focus on making my own online income…

  17. Azad Shaikh says:

Nice post. I had never launched a product of my own. But now I am willing to. I had started a new site for that. My plan is:

Get a list of about 500 people interested in my product by giving away free report. ( I got 25 already).

Get them talk to me and show them that I do know what I do and selling to them.

Then a launch my product ( an ebook with my original content).

What do you think about this? I want to get this done before this December ends.

The site I am talking about is but its not yet ready completely and my niche is “Website traffic” and I know it’s really hot and I have something new to offer.

  18. This post was a big help! I’m still putting my blog piece by piece but I think I should be ready to make my own product sooner or later.

    Good Stuff Michael

  19. Dwayne Huggins says:

Dude. It is because of you I re-did my site (still a work in progress, but I’m seeing results already).

Love getting value like this that you have just provided. It fuels the brain with more ideas.

    So thank you.

  20. Great post.

Thanks for the info and also great job on popup domination.

looking forward to your next product.

  21. Awesome, awesome, awesome tips, Michael. I’ll be launching a membership site next year and am PSYCHED after reading this post! I already bought Popup Domination and love it and will definitely look into these products when the time comes.

Question: Did you consider AMember before you settled in DAP? I’ve heard a lot of great things about AMember and not as much about DAP.

  22. that’s good of you mike. keep it up

  23. Hi Michael,

I started using DAP a while back and I fully back your endoresement. @Tristan – DAP is a bit better integrated into WordPress and it is brilliant when it comes to “dripping content” (ie giving access to courses and material a bit at a time – a bit like using an autoresponder). Wishlist member is another to consider but it’s less good at the dripping.

I am such a fan of Optimizepress it’s ridiculous. I have a couple of video showcase sites using it and couple of squeeze pages. Haven’t yet switched over my membership site to using it as the membership templates are relatively new – but plan to do so asap.

  24. Joey kissimmee says:

Great post there Dunlop. You’ve got quite a readership 😉

One thing about paypal I hate is that they can shut you down at any moment. Happened to me and to many others. Then they won’t give back the $$$ for 6 months.

With Clickbank, the way I see it is that they handle everything for me, payroll, affiliates, all that jazz. So the 9% they take is nothing compared to what it will cost you in time and money if you were to do it all your self.

Other then that, optimizepress is a hot product. I use it my self and I highly recommend it.

Keep up the great work here brotha.

Let’s talk soon yeah, I still gotta interview you 😉

  25. As always you provide great content and inspiration that there is hope for a newbie to get started. Thanks By the way are you coming to the States for any of the shows?

  26. Excellent and comprehensive post Micheal.

You mentioned that you found 2 membership options. I am curious what your second option was (maybe Wishlist?) but what benefits or features pushed you to choose DAP?

  27. hasbulaqill says:

thanks for sharing man! keep it up!

  28. This is a great tutorial, Michael. One of your best! The graphics/screenshots are awesome and really bring everything into focus. Thanks for putting this together.

P.S. You’re the hottest Internet marketer… On the Internet! *kiss*

  29. Martha Giffen says:

First time to your site. It’s awesome! You give so much information that can actually be used! I’ve been online for a couple of years, have created products and basically paid my dues. Your outline is a good one for newbies.

  30. Thank you so much Michael. Your post just answered a lot of questions I had and was very timely. You are providing a lot of valuable information and resources here and it is much appreciated. Thanks for testing out these products and services and letting us know your feedback. Thanks again for your great blog post! Jody

  32. Welly Mulia says:

    Hi Michael

    Nice and interesting post.

Haven’t used DAP before, have been using amember for the last few years and are completely satisfied with it 🙂

    Thanks for your sharing.

    Welly Mulia

PS. I’ve also bought your PUD. Nice piece of technology you have!

  33. Hey Michael,

Great resources and even better explanation about how to make the most of them. Your insight into Internet marketing is always impressive. What are your thoughts about wealth creation products?

  34. Hi Michael,

Quick question about using the shopping cart feature of DAP.

Are you required to get a SSL certificate to host it on your servers and are there any laws/protocols (especially concerning privacy) that you need to follow?

  35. Great post,

I think I will go this route next time I build a website.

    Bryan – Turbo Fitness Secrets

  36. Justin Germino says:

At some point I realize I need to create a digital product to sell but even with my site being as popular as it is, I don’t feel it is nearly successful enough to start vamping a program to offer out to readers when the market is so saturated.

Congratulations on your success, as a user and affiliate of Popup Domination I know it helped me build my subscriber list, I am not as successful as an affiliate however as it is heavily saturated by many of the same bloggers selling it now.

    • Just wondering at what point do you feel it would be successful enough to try??

That’s like having a pizzeria and refusing to sell to anyone until the all the seats are full.

And as far as markets being saturated… there’s always room for someone who has a unique twist. Nothing guarantees success but I can tell you where you’ll be if you don’t make the attempt.

  37. Eddys Velasquez says:

Awesome! this is something that I really needed :)…
Why are you always coming up with such great content? lol

    Keep Rockin!

  38. Ryan Sorensen says:

I have been a reader of yours since late 2008 on and I have always loved your style – over providing awesome, clear, and honest content.

I just bought optimizepress from your link and plan on getting DAP too. I already have a product in the works and am moving my family to the Caribbean in January for some social proof and for some fun!

Hey man, thanks for the inspiration over the years. It’s been fun seeing your progress.

And when I meet you at a conference in the future, we’ll chat and I’ll set up an interview with YOU!

  39. Hi,

I just loved the article and agree with most of the advice.

I definitely agree with Clickbank taking big chunks (albeit to provide great service and pay affiliates automatically).

Now, please do correct me if I’m wrong, but a while ago I experimented with PayPal Pro (aka for businesses) and I found that they indeed handle credit cards, but they need to set up a Paypal account first.

I found that buyers didn’t want to take that extra step. Is it still the case that Paypal won’t accept credit cards without them signing up for a Paypal account first, hence they can’t just put in their credit card details, buy the productand get it over with?

  40. Tim Atkinson says:

Great post my friend. Great way to lay out how to make it happen, great resources and a nice way to get affiliate commissions with a well developed blog post. Quick question, why no social media plug ins on your blog? Don’t get me wrong you have a wonderful blog and get lots of traffic,,just wondering:) Cheers!

  41. Hi Michael,

Great Post! I did have a question on outsourcing your research on some of your posts. Which companies would you recommend for this type of service?

    Love your blog,

  42. Luke Etheridge says:

Now this is what I’m talking about! – this post is on the money for anyone who wants to start building and marketing there own product.

I personally love your emphasis on offering great value – I would never be comfortable offering something which is ‘half-assed’ or lacks quality.

I think the main reason PopUp Domination stands out so much is because it is revolutionary in the sense that it helps the complete novice to implement what was once a very techie thing to have! Meaning that the product is clearly good and holds a lot of value!

Thanks again Michael – Still wanna do this interview and have a proper catch up in Southampton, been ill lately but I’ll reach out on Skype soon if your still game?

  43. Thanks for the ninja like transparency Michael. Older guys like even me could learn a thing from young entrepreneurs like you.

    Hey Michael
It’s been cool to watch you develop over the last year or so. This post rocks.
You keep getting better all the time

I think this technology has finally gotten to a point where even I can jump in

  46. Michael,

a great post again, and I like that your screencaptures are slightly tilted…just a good look.

I’ll be getting optimize press probably today…

    ALWAYS amazing info…keep rockin..
