Icon6 Does anyone use Magento for eCommerce?

Hey all,

Anyone here had any experience with the popular open source eCommerce platform called Magento?

I worked with it around 8 months ago, and I found it a great platform, but the only thing wrong with it is that it was a pain in the ass to update or upgrade to the next version.

Whats your opinion?

Yes it is a great system. BUT, it has many drawbacks. It's bloated and slow on most webhosts. It basically needs specialized hosting to run it properly. Huge learning curve for clients if they need to add products with attributes such as size and color.

How ironic is this topic...I've just spent the last few days playing with them and finding out the differences.

Working on a XP system, and on a localhost development environment, I couldn't get Magento to work if my Life depended on it. Okay, I finally did, but it was hack hack hack. Updates break everything. Overall very slow.

OsCommerce i think is better but not as nice template designs. More SEO options i think.

There is a 3rd contender which I'll include...which is Zen Cart. Basically, its the Mac of the eCommerce packages, and everything is done for you. Its as easy as setting up wordpress. Easy to manipulate. Runs Fast. No problems so far.

Seriously, you like zen cart? Ive never really tried it but they don't really make it look too great on their website.

Magento is soo slow on some servers. But I suppose its ok if your on a very tight budget.

Anyone seen Shopify? That looks awesome...

Zencart blows. It's built off OSCommerce. Templates are better than oscommerce. I have heard good things about CoreCommerce. I haven't tried it but it looks similar to Shopify. I am seriously about to give up on ecommerce. I have built sites with just about all of the box solutions. OsCommerce, Zencart, Magento, Viart and a few others that I can't remember. The Viart cart is ok but hard to skin but it's been a while since I used it.
The funniest thing about Magento, I couldn't get it working on my Media Temple DV, or my local dev, but it installed fine on GoDaddy. I just can't update it and it's so slow you could take a nap waiting for pages to load.

huh? all are Windows. My PC broke a while back, and now I can only install 1 operating system. Wish I could have a setup of XP+7+UBUNTU.

Hey Andy,

I've been using Magento for around a year now and would not consider any other platform. I do agree upgrading can be a pain, especially when you have as many mods as we do on our store... Designer watches, Police watches, Mens & Ladies watches & cheap UK prices | Wristwatches.co.uk
