The Missing Link To More Blog Traffic

The Missing Link To More Blog Traffic

I first met David back in 2009 at Ryan Lee’s continuity summit. He was just starting out and if you had asked me then if I thought he would play such a powerful and required part in my business in 2011, I would of not believed you. In March, he took over my SEO and has increased the daily traffic from search engines by 500 visitors a day in 3 short months. If you need to buy one eBook EVER, it’s this one. Traffic means money! Check it out, click here.

Over to you Dave…

My name is Dave Sinick and I run an SEO company out in San Diego, California. My company has helped Michael with his blog’s SEO – so Michael wanted me to write a post today to talk to you guys about the “missing link” when it comes to getting more traffic from your site (from your already existing content, and from all future content).

If you’ve been struggling to get search engine traffic to your blog, then this post might just be the “missing link” to getting more visitors.

Here’s the deal. When it comes to getting traffic to your site, content is king, right?

Well, not completely.

To me, content is more like the foundation on which you build your house. Without good content, like a house without a foundation, your blog will collapse (and fail).

And Google loves good content. Google WANTS to give you free traffic to your content. They WANT their users to find good content when they search for it, because when they find your good content – they are like “man, Google really did a good job here, I will use them again for all of my searches” which allows Google to retain a customer, and generate more advertising revenue.

The thing is, if you set up your content improperly, Google won’t understand what keywords you’re trying to rank your site for — and you won’t get the search engine traffic that they want to give you.

You could have the best content in the world that would bring people back to your blog over and over again, but no one would ever see it.

So we understand that A) Content is important and B) Google wants it’s users to find your best content — and funnel traffic to you.

However…this is where most people mess up. They take the “if you build it, they will come” approach to getting traffic – and forget about On-site SEO.

“On-Site SEO, you say? Isn’t that completely worthless now? Doesn’t google not care about that stuff anymore?”

Well, random guy who I just made up to make a point, in fact, Google still very much cares about your on-site SEO. Proper on-site SEO is the foundation to any real SEO campaign — and without it, you will find yourself stonewalled when you try to rank for keywords. Without proper on-site SEO, you make ranking for keywords 10 times harder than it should be.

It’s like buying a car without an engine. You’ll push your foot as hard as you can on the gas pedal, but no matter what, your car is not going anywhere. All the links in the world won’t make your site rank without certain proper on-page factors.

In fact, it’s crazy to think that you would write ANY content online and then not optimize it properly for the search engines. That’s like Google handing you a check for thousands of dollars and you saying “nah, I’m good.”

Now when I talk about on-page SEO, I’m not referring to stuffing your blog posts with keywords, or making spammy content, or anything along those lines. I’m not talking about stuff that takes a lot of time, either.

The truth is, On-page SEO is something that:

  • Doesn’t take a lot of time to setup
  • Doesn’t require any real technical knowledge
  • Can be used inside of your content without appearing spammy
  • Google WANTS you to do properly
  • Can be systemized for all future content, and
  • It’s benefits will last as long as your site is up

And plain and simply: it works.

Just look at some of the keywords that we’ve helped Michael rank for (In just 30 days):

Optimize Press:

OptimizePress The Missing Link To More Blog Traffic

Make Money Blogging:

MakeMoneyBlogging The Missing Link To More Blog Traffic

James Schramko:

JamesS The Missing Link To More Blog Traffic

And that’s just a sampling of the keywords we’re helping him with. Most of these rankings occurred just from changing parts of Michael’s content (his on-site SEO), and they allowed our linkbuilding efforts to be infinitely more effective. It literally took us 30 days to get him on the first page for “Make Money Blogging” — a keyword that gets 10,000 EXACT searches a month.

And we’ve replicated these results on some of our own sites as well:

Screen shot 2011 07 06 at 2.08.44 PM The Missing Link To More Blog Traffic(That’s us at #1, #4, and #5, dominating our competition)

So you can see that these on-site SEO techniques can dramatically help increase your rankings, and increase the effect of linkbuilding.

“So, where can I learn more?”

Well, we actually just released a program called The WordPress SEO Blueprint in which my business partner (Tom Lambert) and myself go through everything we do and have done to get our WordPress sites ranking at the top of the search engines. And to sweeten the deal, we’re also offering the first 50 people who order a free on-site SEO report in which we go through your site and tell you everything that you need to fix to get your blog ranking as soon as possible.

So check it out – and let us know if you have any questions in the comments section!

Thanks for the great post Dave! It seems this is really the "missing link" and I'll start focusing more on my on-page SEO from now on. I have one question however. If I'm currently ranking for some of my desired keywords and I decide to edit the pages to reflect the my keywords (I mean to optimize it properly). Do you think this will affect my existing search engine rankings?

Onibalusi, of course it will. If you do the job right the effect is positive unless those ahead of you are simply too strong. If you do it wrong, then your rankings will drop. My own tip is - don't overoptimize the exact keyword phrase. 2-3% is ok for a 2 word phrase but 1% is just fine for a phrase that is 3 words and for long tail phrases of 4 or 5 keywords, sometimes a density of .5% is just fine. Also use synonyms if your keyword density is getting too high. Google isn't stupid they now know when a site is simply trying to spam them

Onibalusi, yes, On-Page SEO will affect your existing ranking. The best thing is to try it on a few posts first. You'll see the results within 48 hours.

Great post! I have one question, can your program help me rank for keywords in spanish? I have a some niche sites in spanish and would like to improve SEO on them

Jamie, Spanish and other non-english languages are typically so much easier to rank for. I haven't seen the blueprint yet but I am sooooo sure it will work very well on a spanish site. Why? Because the most active seo people in the world speak and write english, lol. End result is that seo and ppc in spanish is still wide open, hombre. How about 2 cent clicks from facebook paid clicks?

Hi Onibalusi On-Page SEO is the first thing you need to do before continuing on to off-page SEO, such a link building etc... For example: If you maintain a #6 ranking for a keyword on Google and you decide to optimize it for even more optimization, then you need to make sure you have at least these factors: in order to rank higher in the search results. 10 Key On-Page Factors 1. Domain Name (Age and keyword relevance in the domain name) 2. Title Tag (Is your Keyword In your Title Tag) 3. Page Name (Example yoursite.com/keyword.html) 4. H1,H2, and H3 Tags (Headline Tags in your Article Content) 5. First Sentence and last sentence (example: your keyword in the title, middle, and footer of your content) 6. Keyword Density (2% - 8% is normal) 7. Page Load Time (Google Punishes SLOW – Mill seconds count) (WordPress is ok for this) 8. Content Length (around 500 – 1000 words long) 9. Image Names and Alt Tags (Assign the keyword, Alt Tags to that image) 10. Bold and Italics (Use on H1, and H2 Headline, and make keyword bold or italics) These are the core factor you should have in your On-Page SEO Hope that helps Cheers Danny Howard

Great post my friend. I avoided SEO for a while thinking it was too complicated. But once I actually started learning and read Googles manual it's really a simple thing to do. Simple on page seo with some good linkbuilding juice is not complicated at all so I learned 8)

Hey guys, Yeah - SEO is really not as hard as it's typically made out to be. I used to think that ranking for competitive keywords was basically impossible -- that you had to spend a lot of money or have a super authoritative site -- that is absolutely not true. If you just take some time to learn SEO, you'd be surprised at what you can do -- even taking out some BIG authority sites that you might otherwise think you can't compete with. I'll be responding to comments for the next few days so if you guys have any questions for Tom or I let us know :)

Hi, thank you for the very clear presentation. Does this apply for different languages? Can I use the same techniques in portuguese for may sites here in Brazil? Regards!

SEO is pretty easy once you study it a bit. But I'm always interested in learning new techniques that work for others.

If I had money to burn, I'd be in. I do know that once you see that Google traffic flowing, you want more. I'll be looking over this a few more times to help get more out of it.

On page SEO is an absolute must do. Testing different factors to see how your rankings change is great knowledge to have and will help enhance your off page factors greatly.

Great post, and something that people (including myself) ignored for too many years. I started focusing my efforts to on-site SEO a little over a year ago and my online business has exploded. As said above, it's really not hard at all....if you know the "secrets" that are really freely available online, although segmented and difficult to put together. The product above looks like a winner and probably lays everything out nicely. For those wanting to learn more about SEO and how simple it really can be, I'd have a look. Disclaimer: I've never tried these guys above, but if they're recommended here, you know they're legit:)

I am really interested in your book, but my site runs on Drupal, not Wordpress. I notice that all of the materials are Wordpress specific. Do you have another version for non-Wordpress websites? Thanks

Fantastic job, Dave. I think Michael would be well pleased with that result, especially given the quality of keyword search terms involved. You are 100% right by stating that Google does care about onsite optimization(SEO). Just a few tweaks here and there, can definitely bring in some improved results.
